Abstract

The role of Sociology and Anthropology in the field of Tourism Studies is discussed, considering that this field is characterized by two types of different and sometimes conflicting demands: In one hand, the demand of explanation, understanding or interpretation of tourist phenomena and, on the other hand, the demand arising from the organization of the markets, which leads to the idea of an applied Sociology and Anthropology. This dilemma points out to similarities among Tourism and Communication studies, making possible a comparative analysis, seeking to establish the limits and the possibilities of an effective interdisciplinary dialogue.
