The practice of hospitality in the city: territories for welcoming and accommodating vulnerable people

ABSTRACT
Globally, COVID-19 has brought new terms of living and coexistence, furthermore the need to protect people, exposing the primary care importance related to local health, housing, and work. To understand identifies and qualifies the ways in which, in São Paulo, spaces were structured to support and protect vulnerable groups, the research was based on the theoretical assumptions of hospitality and the social process of producing functional urban spaces, to identify the initiatives taken to minimize a risk of contagion, provide temporary housing, and offer safety and health protection to specific vulnerable populations. Document analysis was undertaken using secondary sources: articles published in three types of press outlets with wide, regular, and continuous circulation. A total of 1,948 articles were identified, 331 of which were selected and evaluated by thematic and interpretative textual analysis. The results showed that, among the municipal initiatives to combat the pandemic, six types of facilities dedicated to the care of vulnerable people were implemented. This research reflets on the possibilities of practicing hospitality in the city and demonstrated that São Paulo practiced solidarity hospitality by defunctionalizing urban structures, and these practices can be considered models to be improved and adopted in crisis situations.
